Ever had the experience of eating a delicious meal out with friends, and when it comes time for dessert, the menu is compiled completely of things you can’t eat? I have, because I’m vegan. I am vegan because I love animals, my body, and the planet. Any vegan can tell you that even when you go out to a restaurant that has great cruelty-free options for the meal, when it comes time for dessert we’re usually down for the count.
Fried ice cream. Pie. Brownies. Cakes. Eclairs. All delicious, made with animal products, and unsuitable for vegans. Homemade vegan treats are tasty… but sometimes you just don’t feel like spending two hours baking just to eat one cookie. As someone that has an insatiable sweet tooth, it’s super hard to turn down an offering of three-layer chocolate fudge cake when my friend is eating it in front of me.
This is why, for my first vegan restaurant review, I wanted to focus on a feminist-run, completely vegan bakery, because clearly, dessert is the most important part of any meal. If you’re looking for a delicious goodie made with ingredients that are sustainable, locally acquired, cruelty-free and delicious, look no further than X’s to O’s bakery in Troy, NY.
Located at 97 4th Street, right on the corner, this adorable little shop will not only quench your sweet tooth. X’s to O’s also offers a variety of lunch menu items that vary weekly depending on what ingredients are available locally, as well as smoothies and espresso drinks to complete any meal!
X’s to O’s specializes in strictly vegan baked goods, including cakes and cupcakes of all flavors, cheesecake, cookies, brownies, canoe boats that will knock your socks off, and my personal favorite, the s’mores bar. You want a cake that tastes like a Milky Way? They got it! You want an apple cider flavored cupcake? They got it! Did you say you want to have an orgasm? Well how about a chocolate peanut butter orgasm cake! They got it! If you need a cake or dessert platter made for a special occasion, X’s to O’s is the place to go. They do special orders on a wide array of desserts that are not only vegan and delicious, but can also all be made gluten-free!
You don’t have to travel all the way to their shop to enjoy a little vegan deliciousness, either. Sarah Preston, the owner of the shop, sells her delicious treats wholesale, too. You can grab some X’s to O’s at either Bomber’s Burrito Bar, the Honest Weight Co-op, Lil Buddha Tea, Healthy Fresh cafe in Crossgates Mall, the Niskayuna Food Co-op, Charles F. Lucas Confectionery and Wine Bar, and Uncle Sam’s Health Food Store in both the Latham and Troy locations. If you’re from out of the area, you can order them online at Pangea’s Onine Vegan Store, and there are also locations in Brooklyn, NY, California, and Maryland.
I can say that since I’ve gone vegan, I have never tasted a dessert as delicious as one from X’s to O’s. They work really hard to make treats that are good for your body, the animals, and the planet. I show my support by going back again and again to try all of their super vegan, super delicious desserts!
